My name’s Ashley Fletcher, and I’m an MFA candidate at MICA. I’m also one of two 2018 Design Continuum Fund Scholarship recipients. As you may have heard, applications are now being accepted for 2019 scholarships, and I wanted to tell you about my experiences and why I think you or someone in your network should apply.
The AIGA DC Design Continuum Fund gave me an opportunity to further my passion for design by helping fund my graduate school education. When I decided to go to graduate school, I was working full time. I knew that quitting my job would be a huge financial risk. Since receiving the scholarship, I have been able to focus on pursuing my education and not on the burden of my financial status. I encourage every student who is passionate about art and design to apply for the Continuum Fund!
I’ve also been welcomed by AIGA DC’s talented network of designers, and connected with opportunities to build my network, find mentors, and do my favorite thing — design. The support that I have received from AIGA DC has helped boost my confidence in my design career and kick-started my desire to be more involved in the community.
This scholarship benefits minority and economically disadvantaged students who are studying art and design disciplines and who have a demonstrated commitment to giving back to the community. If this sounds like you — you should apply! If you’ve applied in the past, you should apply again. I applied twice before receiving my scholarship.
And if you know of someone who could benefit from this scholarship, help spread the word. You never know how someone’s life will be changed.
I hope you or someone you know will apply!
